There is a problem with the FindIt button in PubMed (NCBI) database records when using the Firefox browser (the button does not appear to be clickable).
This is a known issue at NCBI and is affecting other institutions using SFX.
Two temporary solutions until the problem is fixed are:
1) Click the very top of the button image (this area *is* clickable)
2) Use IE.

Internationally acclaimed science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson will visit us here at Georgia Tech next week. Robinson is generally considered to be one of the most important science fiction authors of our time, and has worked closely with a variety of scientists and scientific institutions (including the NSF) to create gripping, carefully detailed, and sometimes alarmingly realistic depictions of terraforming, climate change, and the scientific and social practices associated with these things.
Several events are planned for Robinson’s visit, included an interview and open Q&A at the Library.
THURSDAY, MARCH 6
11:00 am-12:00 pm: **Science Fiction Author Q&A**
Come meet international award-winning science fiction author Kim Stanley
Robinson in an intimate setting. This event is open to all Georgia Tech students

radio and then open to a general discussion with Robinson.
This event is hosted by the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture
with the participation of WREK radio and the Georgia Tech Library.
Location: Library East Commons

THURSDAY, MARCH 6
4:00 pm-6:00 pm: **Open Lecture by Science Fiction Author Kim Stanley Robinson**

Title: Are cities warming faster than the planet as a whole?
Abstract: How rapidly are large U.S. cities like Atlanta warming and what steps can be taken to manage climate change in urban areas? This talk will explore the methods employed to measure urban and global temperature trends and document the rate of temperature change within 50 of the most populous U.S. metropolitan areas between 1950 and 2000. The distinction between the urban and global mechanisms of warming will be considered as part of a more general discussion of climate change management in cities.
This presentation is free and open to all!

March 4, 2008

Speaker: Jason Freeman , D.M.A. Assistant Professor - Music Department - College of Architecture
Title:
Composer, Performer, Listener
Abstract:
Even as social networking, multi-player gaming, and collaborative content creation become increasingly important in our lives, concert musical performance continues to follow a model in which the audience remains passive, with little connection to the composer, to the performers, or to each other. This Talk will explore how technology can transform the concert experience by inviting the audience to shape the music as it is performed or by engaging audiences in personalized musical experiences online.

Dear GALILEO Users,
EBSCO databases are accessible again. EBSCO has reported that power has been restored to their ISP’s server room and all EBSCO databases are now accessible.
Thanks for your patience while this problem was worked out.
-Katie
2:38 pm: The following is the latest from EBSCO:
Power Outage Issue traced back to 1 Summer Street Boston. Address has
major internet connections and as a result of subsequent alternate
routing, some customers may still be experiencing connection issues to
EBSCOhost Services. We are working with our ISPs as a top priority to
resolve.

————
Due to a power outage at EBSCO, EBSCOhost databases are either unavailable or very slow in response. We’ll post an update when there is more info. about this.
_________________
Dear GALILEO Users,
It seems that a major power outage in Ipswich, Mass. has caused a disruption in EBSCOhost’s internet connectivity. For the short term, slow access to EBSCOhost databases is expected.

Did you know the Library has over 270 databases that help identify the best research resources? Unlike search engines that perform a general search of the web, these databases are quality-controlled so that their results are reputable and timely. It is also a good idea to verify information in more than one source. Encyclopedias, for example, give a great overview of a topic but are not considered scholarly sources. This is especially true of Wikipedia which can be edited by almost anyone. Ask a librarian to help you identify the highest quality research resources in your field.

It offers the full text of articles from ACMs journals, newsletters, articles, and conference proceedings. ACM, or the Association for Computing Machinery, is the top professional organization in the Computer Science field. Animators might particularly be interested in articles from the journal ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics. SIGGRAPH is the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques.
