Library Web Site Receives Award

The Library’s web exhibit of E.E. Barnard’s “A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of The Milky Way” was awarded the Griffith Observatory Star Award for the Week of December 4-10. The award recognizes “excellence in web sites that promote public awareness of astronomy.” The web exhibit was created by the Library in collaboration with Astronomer Dr. James Sowell of Georgia Tech’s Physics Department.

The Georgia Tech Library is very pleased to announce that the following Nature titles are now available online –

  • Biotechnology
  • Cell Biology
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Materials
  • Medicine
  • Neuroscience
  • Structural & Molecular Biology
  • Nature Reviews, Cancer
  • Nature Reviews, Microbiology

In addition, we have purchased the Nature Archive which will provide online access back to 1950.  Current access is from 1980 forward and completion of the archive is expected sometime in 2006.

1 East undergoes Renovation

The first phase in an exciting and comprehensive renovation.Some areas in 1 East will be closed to the public during this renovation.The Circulation Desk and staff offices in 1 East remain open to the public. Photocopiers are next to the service desk: 2 East.

Renovation completed in Fall 2005, to include:

  • Jazzman’s Cafe
  • New group and individual computer workstations
  • Comfortable/versatile study and work spaces
  • Improved leisure and popular reading area
  • Art displays featuring GT artists
  • Theatre space for presentations and readings
  • And much, much more!

1 East renovations are financed in part by a generous donation from The Georgia Tech Class of 1955.

Sacraments of Science - Lecture and Exhibition

Join the Georgia Tech Department of Physics for a lecture and exhibition of unique documents in the sciences. Featured materials include works by Galileo, Newton and Einstein. Archivists and librarians will discuss these rare works. Dennis Taylor of Clemson University will show and discuss Galileo’s opus, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief Systems of the World . Often referred to as the Dialog and published in 1632, this is the work that lead to Galileo’s conviction as a heretic by the Inquisition.

Jody Thompson of the Georgia Tech Archives will show and discuss Newton ’s Principia . A rare copy of the first edition owned by Georgia Tech will be available for viewing. Newton ’s theories would never have been written down were it not for the encouragement of his friend Sir Edmund Hailey.

Anne Salter of Oglethorpe University will present a rare manuscript written by Albert Einstein. It has been 100 years since he managed to completely over turn the world as other scientist knew it with his general and special theories of relativity.

The Georgia Tech Library is sponsoring a new lecture series featuring research by Georgia Tech faculty presented for the rest of us.

Lecturers will discuss their research in laymen’s terms. The aim of the series is to make research understandable to all of us in the Georgia Tech community.

This semester the series features the following lectures:
