Database and E-journal Access Affected by Implementation of Proxy Server

Friday, May 16th, 2003

What has been affected?
Access to the Library’s e-journals and databases

How has access been affected?
Authentication now occurs by entering through the Library’s Proxy Server. This means that you will have to navigate through the Library’s website to access databases and e-journals*.

Can I bookmark direct links to E-Journals again?
YES! Add this prefix in front of the old URL. http://www.library.gatech.edu:2048/login?url=

For example, for Physical Review A, the new URL is http://www.library.gatech.edu:2048/login?url=http://pra.aps.org/

You will still be prompted to authenticate with your PRISM id/password but the link will bring you directly to the e-journal. Once you pass through the proxy you will not be prompted again. However, please note that after 15 minutes of inactivity the proxy will automatically close, and you will be required to log-in.

Why did the Library change to a Proxy Server?
The Georgia Tech Library, along with libraries around the country, made this change in response to a security issues. Under our previous protocols, individuals could establish an “Open Proxy”. Once the open proxy was established, unauthorized users were able to enter the library’s databases and e-journals and illegally download content. Visit the JSTOR web site for an in-depth explanation of these issues - http://www.jstor.org/news/2002.12/open-proxy.html

OIT Announces New Guidelines for Printing in Labs

Friday, April 18th, 2003

Beginning May 12, the 50-page per week limit placed on student, faculty and staff prism accounts will be modified. The accounts will be given a “bank” of 800 sheets for use throughout the semester. Central-PS will still be available as well and is suggested for larger prints or for an alternative if the 800 sheets have been depleted. The 800 sheet quota will be reset at the beginning of each semester with no rollover of any unused quota. Please keep in mind, printing from the color printer located in the Library West Commons Multimedia Center will result in a 5-for-1 charge, with each sheet printed costing 5 units. This change is the result of feedback from users and will allow more flexibility with free printing.

Electronic Journal Access

Wednesday, April 9th, 2003

The Library is modifying access to its electronic journals, databases, etc. due to security problems that information providers are experiencing worldwide.Beginning May 5th users of the Library’s electronic resources will no longer be able to create or utilize direct links to electronic journals and databases.

Students, faculty, and staff will instead gain access through the Library web site at http://www.library.gatech.edu From the library web site one can select either the databases link or the e-journals link, and pick the resources needed. You will be prompted for your PRISM id and password. An advantage to this new process is it will make off campus access more stable.

If you have any questions or would like more information please contact your College or School’s Information Consultant (Subject Librarian), the Information Services Desk (404-894-4530) or Tim Daniels (404-894-0816).

Exhibit Preview
Women were officially admitted to Georgia Tech in 1952. To gain entry, women attending Tech’s evening school and female staff joined forces with Tech’s president to overturn the state statue that kept them off campus. Who were these women and what were the contributions they made? As the population of women continued to grow on campus, how did Tech change? What was it like to be some of the first women on campus? Through a series of timelines, images, profiles and memorabilia, these questions are explored in the 50 Years of Women at Tech Exhibition presented by the Georgia Tech Library.
