Database and E-journal Access Affected by Implementation of Proxy Server

What has been affected?
Access to the Library’s e-journals and databases

How has access been affected?
Authentication now occurs by entering through the Library’s Proxy Server. This means that you will have to navigate through the Library’s website to access databases and e-journals*.

Can I bookmark direct links to E-Journals again?
YES! Add this prefix in front of the old URL. http://www.library.gatech.edu:2048/login?url=

For example, for Physical Review A, the new URL is http://www.library.gatech.edu:2048/login?url=http://pra.aps.org/

You will still be prompted to authenticate with your PRISM id/password but the link will bring you directly to the e-journal. Once you pass through the proxy you will not be prompted again. However, please note that after 15 minutes of inactivity the proxy will automatically close, and you will be required to log-in.

Why did the Library change to a Proxy Server?
The Georgia Tech Library, along with libraries around the country, made this change in response to a security issues. Under our previous protocols, individuals could establish an “Open Proxy”. Once the open proxy was established, unauthorized users were able to enter the library’s databases and e-journals and illegally download content. Visit the JSTOR web site for an in-depth explanation of these issues - http://www.jstor.org/news/2002.12/open-proxy.html
